Medicare Advantage PFFS Plans
Get the benefits of a Medicare Advantage plan without the restrictions of a contracted network with UnitedHealthcare’s Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) plans.
Why should an employer choose these plans?
The UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage PFFS plans offer your retirees the flexibility and freedom of national coverage, while still allowing you to control your costs. You'll also be able to:
- Enjoy freedom from concerns of localized or regional plan coverage areas, since you can offer national coverage with one consistent benefit design
- Combine a plan with a Medicare Advantage HMO, PPO or POS plan (where available) , for more cost-effective coverage
- Customize your benefits
- Reduce your financial risk because these plans are fully insured
- Add Medicare Part D Prescription Drug coverage, giving your retirees medical and prescription drug coverage in one plan
- Work with a dedicated implementation team to ensure a smooth transition into the plan
What are PFFS plans?
Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) plans* are non-network plans. These plans let members receive care from any doctor or hospital that accepts the plan's payment terms and conditions.
The doctors and hospitals that agree to accept these terms are called “deemed” providers. Plan members can receive covered services from any deemed provider in the U.S. However, members must confirm deeming every time a service is provided.
Unlike other Medicare Advantage plans, PFFS plans do not require a doctor or hospital to contract with a health plan to provide services. This means that doctors or hospitals that do not agree to our PFFS plans' terms and conditions may choose not to provide health care services to a plan member, except in emergencies.
Where are UnitedHealthcare PFFS plans available?
UnitedHealthcare PFFS plans are available on a group basis in all counties in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.
How do these plans benefit retirees?
UnitedHealthcare’s PFFS plans offer retirees great value and benefits, and the freedom to choose. They'll get:
- The flexibility to choose any doctor, specialist and hospital that accepts the plan's payment terms and conditions because there's no provider network
- The convenience of a single plan for their Medicare coverage
- More benefits than Original Medicare Part A and Part B
- Built-in Medicare Part D Prescription Drug coverage (optional)
- Limits to annual out-of-pocket expenses

*A Medicare Advantage Private Fee-for-Service plan works differently than a Medicare supplement plan. Your doctor or hospital is not required to agree to accept the plan's terms and conditions, and thus may choose not to treat you, with the exception of emergencies. If your doctor or hospital does not agree to accept our payment terms and conditions, they may choose not to provide health care services to you, except in emergencies.
