ARTICLE Provide Prescription Drug Benefits

Prescription prices have risen steadily over the last several years, and studies indicate this trend will continue:

  • Spending on medication will increase by 8.4 percent annually through 2010.1
  • During this same period, the population between 55 and 64 years old will grow by 50 percent. This group spends three times more than young consumers on prescription drug costs.1
  • Spending on specialty medications has increased 95 percent over the past five years.1

What is a prescription drug benefit plan?
Prescription drug coverage is an additional benefit provided to plan members to subsidize the cost of medications. If offered, it is typically part of an overall medical benefits plan.

Here’s how we can help.
UnitedHealth Pharmaceutical Solutions (UHPS) can help you minimize pharmaceutical costs and maximize care by:

  • Promoting appropriate use of prescription medications.
  • Offering pharmacy benefit management services and a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan.
  • Determining a medication’s overall health value, regardless of brand or generic status. We look at clinical, economic, and outcomes-based evidence, along with member data, to assess the overall value of the medication.
