Cancer Matters Resource Guide Helps Charlotte-Area Residents Identify Local Cancer-Care Resources
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 15, 2008) April is National Cancer Control Month, and UnitedHealthcare is introducing the Cancer Matters Resource Guide, a directory of Charlotte-area businesses and medical facilities that offer support services for cancer patients and their families.
The Cancer Matters Resource Guide is available at no charge at many Charlotte-area non-profit organizations, local doctors' offices and online at www.MyCancerHub.com. The guide features local resources listed alphabetically by category for easier reference such as home health, respite and hospice care, financial assistance, family support groups, transportation assistance and much more. It is published by Cancer Matters, an independent cancer support organization, and UnitedHealthcare, a UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) company.
In developing the Cancer Matters Resource Guide, UnitedHealthcare conducted research to gain a better understanding of the kinds of information cancer patients and their families need.
"Research shows that cancer patients and their families and caregivers are often unsure how to navigate the vast amount of information available to them, and that easier access to local resources is essential in order to get the critical care and assistance they need," said Lee N. Newcomer, M.D., senior vice president, Oncology, for UnitedHealthcare. "We partnered with Cancer Matters to ensure that this vital, local information is current, trustworthy and available in a convenient and easy-to-use format for cancer patients and their families and caregivers."
"Our goal with the Cancer Matters Resource Guide is to provide everyone touched by cancer the local and national resources, education and information needed to meet the everyday practical needs and concerns which will enhance a cancer patient's quality of life throughout treatment," said Barbara George, founder of Cancer Matters. "We are pleased to partner with UnitedHealthcare to make the Cancer Matters Resource Guide available to the people who need it most."
