ARTICLE UnitedHealth Group Encourages Its More Than 30 Million Health Plan Customers to Get Their Flu Shots

Listen to our radio message.

MINNEAPOLIS – (Dec. 9, 2008) – Dec. 8 through 12 is National Influenza Vaccination Week, and UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) is reaching out to its more than 30 million health plan participants nationwide and encouraging them to get their flu shots.

UnitedHealth Group is launching a national flu-shot communications campaign to help protect the health and well-being of its customers and remind them that most employer-sponsored commercial, Medicare and Medicaid plans offered through UnitedHealthcare and its affiliates provide full coverage for the vaccination. Customer communications include:

  • Web-based messages posted on the customer Web site, myuhc.com;
  • reminder postcards mailed to certain at-risk populations;
  • telephonic messages that will play for plan participants calling the toll-free customer service line;
  • radio announcements.

"Flu season is here, but it's not too late to get vaccinated against the flu virus," said Sam Ho, M.D., executive vice president and chief medical officer of UnitedHealthcare." Because the virus mutates and changes from one flu season to the next, last year's flu shot won't protect against this year's virus. We encourage our customers, especially people in the high-risk groups for influenza, to make their health a priority this fall by scheduling time to get their annual flu shot."

UnitedHealth Group recommends that anyone who falls under the following categories should get their flu shot vaccinations as soon as possible:

  • children 6 months through 18 years of age;
  • pregnant women;
  • individuals of any age with certain chronic medical conditions;
  • adults 50 years of age and older;
  • individuals who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities

A doctor's order is not required for a flu shot; however, a normal office visit copay or coinsurance may apply. Health plan participants should be sure to bring their UnitedHealthcare ID card. In addition to scheduling an appointment with their primary-care physician for a flu shot, health plan participants can locate a convenient flu shot provider by visiting www.myuhc.com, or by calling the toll-free number on the back of their member ID card.

Customers are reminded to consult their plan documents for specific information regarding flu shot vaccinations.
