Elected officials and community leaders including George Liu, M.D., president, Chinese American Independent Practice Association, New York State Assemblywoman Grace Meng, and New York City Councilman Peter Koo, as well as UnitedHealthcare executives and employees, gathered today at the Sheraton LaGuardia East in Flushing to kick off the Health Expo. Today's activities also included demonstrations by professional ballroom dancers and SilverSneakers fitness program instructors. Ballroom dancing and SilverSneakers are both available through programs offered by UnitedHealthcare's Asian Initiatives.
"I'm grateful for UnitedHealthcare's efforts to promote good health for Chinese Americans in our community, and also for providing such valuable services in a culturally sensitive way in their native language," Koo said. "We hope this expo will continue for many years to come."
"UnitedHealthcare is committed to making it easier for people to live healthy lifestyles, by providing better information and services that support better health care decisions and activities," said Austin Pittman, chief growth officer, UnitedHealthcare Employer & Individual. "We hope those who attend the expo will be inspired to take charge of their health and well-being and see that working toward better health can be fun."
UnitedHealthcare's Asian Initiatives, established in 1994, was one of the first health plans to provide culturally relevant health care services to the Asian-American community in New York City's Chinatown area. Since then, UnitedHealthcare has opened offices serving Korean-American, Pakistani-American and Indian-American communities.
