ARTICLE UnitedHealthcare Donates $5,000 to Foodshare to Prepare for Upcoming Holiday Season

HARTFORD, Conn. (Oct. 28, 2010) - With only four weeks until Thanksgiving, UnitedHealthcare has donated $5,000 to Foodshare to help the nonprofit provide nutritious food to residents in greater Hartford during the upcoming holiday season.

Foodshare serves more than 128,000 people in greater Hartford who are at risk - including more than 10,000 seniors, the working poor, and nearly 50,000 children. In 2009, Foodshare distributed 12 million pounds of food to those living in greater Hartford.

"Support from companies such as UnitedHealthcare is crucial to meeting the needs of local families this holiday season and all year long," said Gloria McAdam, president and chief executive officer, Foodshare. "We are grateful for UnitedHealthcare's support to improve the health and well-being of area families."

"We are pleased to be able to assist Foodshare to help ensure that no one in greater Hartford goes hungry this holiday season," said Mike Matteo, CEO, UnitedHealthcare National Accounts. "UnitedHealthcare is committed to helping people lead healthier lives, which includes putting a nutritious and warm meal on their table this holiday season."

UnitedHealthcare has enjoyed a strong partnership with Foodshare for many years as a corporate sponsor of the Foodshare Walk Against Hunger as well as an annual contributor of donations during the Thanksgiving holiday. Additionally, throughout the year and through various other Hartford organizations supported by Foodshare, UnitedHealthcare employees have been tackling hunger in the greater Hartford community for over a decade.

About Foodshare
Foodshare is the heart of greater Hartford's fight against hunger, bringing together individuals and organizations to create effective solutions to end hunger in all 42 towns of Hartford and Tolland counties. Serving as our region's food bank, we distribute 16 tons of food each day to a network of nearly 350 local partners that feed our hungry neighbors. This vital safety net helps more than 128,000 people in our region who are at risk including seniors, the working poor, and 50,000 children. But ending hunger requires more than just distribution of food. Reducing the number of people in need by increasing their self-sufficiency helps to address the chronic underlying reasons why people are hungry. These stem from poverty, not just the immediate lack of food. And engaging members of the greater community to increase understanding of these real causes and solutions to hunger is crucial. Our goal is to inspire community members to become personally involved in effective hunger solutions. Since 1982, Foodshare has sought to end hunger in our region. Working in partnership with other community leaders such as the United Way, End Hunger Connecticut! and 211 Infoline, Foodshare has the experience and is building the networks necessary to help make this vision a reality.
