UnitedHealthcare and Southwest Tennessee Community College Partner to Promote Healthy Lifestyles for STCC Employees
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Jan. 10, 2011) UnitedHealthcare is donating $10,000 to support Southwest Tennessee Community College's new Healthy Lifestyle program, which includes health and wellness education, nutrition counseling and health screenings to help the college's staff, faculty and family members improve their health.
The program, developed by the Southwest Tennessee Community College Foundation and UnitedHealthcare, will focus on educating participants on the dangers of obesity and diabetes, and helping them adopt healthy lifestyles. It will also include healthy-cooking classes, health literacy assessments, innovative exercise classes, and weight management support groups.
Healthy Lifestyle is designed to meet the needs of the individual participant in a culturally sensitive way. For example, UnitedHealthcare's Generations of Wellness program, a health initiative that focuses specifically on African-American health issues, will be an integral part of the college's new program and will provide educational materials on stress and weight management, and nutritional information.
"It is no secret that Memphis has numerous health issues including high prevalence of obesity, hypertension and type 2 diabetes," said Neal Cordell, coordinator of fitness and wellness, Southwest Tennessee Community College. "This partnership with UnitedHealthcare will enable us to provide a program where culturally appropriate healthy lifestyle choices can be discussed and promoted."
"With the Healthy Lifestyle program, UnitedHealthcare and Southwest Tennessee Community College are combining our collective resources to make a real difference in people's health and quality of life," said Greg Reidy, CEO, UnitedHealthcare of Tennessee. "The new Healthy Lifestyles program will tackle critical conditions like obesity and diabetes and help people make more educated, health-conscious choices."
UnitedHealthcare, a UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) company, serves more than 1.1 million residents in Tennessee with a health care provider network of more than 15,000 physicians and 115 hospitals statewide.
