ARTICLE UnitedHealthcare Named the Healthiest Large Employer in Oregon, According to the Portland Business Journal

PORTLAND, Ore. (Oct. 13, 2011) – UnitedHealthcare has been named the healthiest large employer in Oregon by the Portland Business Journal.

The health and well-being company topped the list of nearly 70 employers considered for the award.

"Our wellness programs motivate employees to take a more active role in their health, and this recognition by the Portland Business Journal reflects the innovative strategies we use to help our plan participants in Oregon, as well as our employees, live healthier lives," said David Hansen, president and CEO, UnitedHealthcare Employer & Individual of Oregon.

UnitedHealthcare offers its employees in Oregon and nationwide a wellness program called "Personal Rewards" that uses health scorecards to encourage healthy behaviors and target specific health actions using customized information, financial incentives and ongoing support. Through the program, employees can access various wellness resources, including onsite biometric screenings, online health assessments, weight-loss coaching and smoking-cessation programs.

After piloting the Personal Rewards Program with its own employees in 2010, the program is now available nationwide to self-insured companies and public sector employers with more than 3,000 medical plan participants. Large companies such as Jones Lang LaSalle (NYSE: JLL) have implemented the program, and Personal Rewards is approaching nearly 1 million participants for January 2012.

Employers are increasingly adopting wellness and prevention programs as a way to improve employee health and productivity, and to better manage their health care costs. Wellness Council of America estimates that a $1 investment in a wellness program saves $3 in health care costs.

"Studies have shown that about half of a person's health status is the result of behavior, which means that the choices people make every day greatly influences their physical and emotional well-being," said Josh Holcomb, UnitedHealthcare's director of health and wellness strategies in Oregon. "Employer wellness programs can help people make more informed decisions, and thus improve their health, by providing the appropriate resources, tools and support."
