In 2025, the American health system navigated unprecedented events and faced significant pressure to address health care’s biggest pain points. At UnitedHealthcare, we understand that health care needs to be more affordable, simple and personal, and we believe we can help drive that change if we continue using these principles as our guide.
This includes reducing waste and unnecessary spending from the system, streamlining processes with the help and responsible use of AI, managing complex care needs more holistically and delivering simpler, more personal and connected experiences. Driving meaningful impacts in these areas requires a relentless effort and renewed commitment across healthcare stakeholders to align incentives and think differently about how we all operate and do business.
Additionally, addressing the challenges ahead will take bold actions and innovative solutions to push past the status quo and achieve the transformation we seek. As employees demand more amid rising health care costs, it will be increasingly vital for employers and carriers to think differently and work together to address the challenges most pressing to them and their workforce. Employers that choose UnitedHealthcare, for instance, can trust that they are working with a carrier that:
- Negotiates for the most competitive rates on behalf of the customers and members we serve
- Continues to expand and enhance its portfolio of products and solutions to prioritize value-based care, support whole-person health needs and empower greater choice and flexibility
- Simplifies the management of benefits and external point solutions as employers and employees seek additional offerings to address cost drivers and diverse health needs
- Ensures employees have access to a digital experience that helps them navigate their unique care needs, utilize the health system more appropriately and connect them to additional support when needed
- Invests in ways to improve the health system at large, including making it easier for brokers, consultants and benefit leaders to manage their plans
As I look to 2026, I believe the industry has the greatest potential to drive increased value to employers and their employees in 3 key areas:
- Delivering personalized experiences at scale: Giving employees more choice in the offerings they can purchase to complement the benefits made available to them through their employer, offering employers more flexibility in how they want to fund employee offerings and tailoring experiences to a member’s preferences and health needs.
- Advancing affordability and quality care: Helping employers accelerate the shift from fee-for-service to value-based care models, making quality and cost of care information more transparent to members and empowering more informed and cost-effective care decisions.
- Leveraging advanced technology: Embracing technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to streamline processes, enable faster care coordination and drive more personalized experiences — but recognizing that their application must be done responsibly and with human review and oversight.
While we have more work to do, UnitedHealthcare is already building the foundation to help transform the health system. I am excited and optimistic about this next era of health care — one that will bring more choice, lower costs and higher-quality care for the American people.
