New tool makes comparing drug prices easier, simplifies administration

With more than 4 billion prescriptions filled in the United States each year, writing a prescription is one of the most common activities in a routine visit with a health care provider. 

Unfortunately, patients and care providers sometimes find out well after the medication has been prescribed that it is not covered, a non-preferred drug or that it requires preauthorization, thus requiring more time and effort to make sure the request is fulfilled. In addition, plan participants are often unaware of more affordable alternative prescription drugs that could be equally effective, including generic options, or are unprepared for the out-of-pocket costs they might owe when they pick up the medication at the pharmacy. 

To help address those issues, a new solution from UnitedHealthcare and OptumRx called PreCheck MyScript is making it easier and quicker for care providers to prescribe medications for their patients. 

PreCheck MyScript streamlines authorizations and makes it easy to compare drug prices

Physicians who prescribe a medication using PreCheck MyScript can see the precise cost information based on the patient’s benefit plan and the pricing information for the selected pharmacy; they will also be alerted to prescription drugs that require prior authorization, are not covered or are non-preferred. PreCheck MyScript also provides alternative, more affordable medications or prescriptions that may not require prior authorization before they are sent to the pharmacy. If the drug requiring prior authorization is still prescribed, physician practices can submit the authorization online and, in some instances, receive instant approval. 

Using PreCheck MyScript, physicians will see an alert on their screen when they prescribe a medication that requires prior authorization. Specific information about the person’s health benefit plan is pre-populated into the system, enabling care provider to answer a series of questions about the medication and submitting the prior authorization request within the app. This eliminates the need to fill out paper forms, fax information or make telephone calls to the health plan to request prior authorization. The app speeds the prior authorization process so that the review and response typically occurs within 24 to 72 hours. This helps reduce costs and results in more timely prescriptions, less administrative hassle and a better patient experience. 

By suggesting alternate medications, PreCheck MyScript provides UnitedHealthcare plan participants the opportunity to discuss various options, including ones that are more affordable but equally effective, with their care provider. Plan participants will also know what their out-of-pocket costs will be before they pick up their prescription at their pharmacy, helping people more effectively plan and budget. 

PreCheck MyScript to be integrated into practice management systems, electronic medical records

UnitedHealthcare created the system in collaboration with OptumRx, physicians and electronic medical record companies. By launching PreCheck MyScript in 2017, UnitedHealthcare became the first health plan in the United States to offer such as resource, which is now available to care providers in its national network. 

PreCheck MyScript is embedded directly into a care provider’s existing workflow if they are using one of various integrated electronic medical record (EMR) platforms. For example, OptumRx and UnitedHealthcare are working with DrFirst, Athenahealth, NewCrop, Allscripts and integration vendors for the largest EMR systems as well as other EMR organizations to integrate these capabilities at the point of care for prescribers. By embedding the solution directly into the care provider’s EMR, physicians can seamlessly view prior-authorization information and drug costs, and send the prescription to the pharmacy without having to switch applications.
