These 6 strategies may reduce care disparities in employee populations and control costs

In this white paper, Patty Starr, president and CEO of Health Action Council, and Craig Kurtzweil, vice president of the UnitedHealthcare Center for Advanced Analytics, find that when companies implement deliberate strategies targeting their employees’ most common health conditions, overall employee health and long-term cost savings may improve. Additionally, a combination of lifestyle modifications and targeted wellness programs may strengthen these strategies to help employers reduce care disparities.

Tips for tackling health care disparities
To address care disparities and ensure all employees have access to quality care, we recommend employers consider the needs of their employees based on factors like demographics and location, and then create simple, targeted wellness programs to address the most prevalent common conditions.

For example, employers can:

  • Promote virtual care to improve access to treatment for specific conditions – for example, mental health support in rural areas
  • Cover medications as preventive care for specific chronic conditions or promote the use of patient assistance programs for specific types of medications
  • Institute an exercise, stretch or meditation program at the beginning of work shifts to improve safety and decrease injuries
  • Create targeted communications for specific regions and demographics
