America’s Health Rankings® 2020 Annual Report now available

The 2020 America’s Health Rankings Annual Report from United Health Foundation finds widespread health disparities have persisted across racial, ethnic, gender, geographic and educational lines even before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2020 report found:

  • Mental and behavioral health disparities have worsened for certain groups, including females and individuals without a high school education. Between 2017 and 2019, females had a 70% higher rate of depression compared to males, and adults who didn’t finish high school had a rate of frequent mental distress that was 123% higher than college graduates.
  • Maternal mortality rates that are 3.4 times higher among Black mothers than Hispanic mothers. Between 2005–2009 and 2015–2019, rates of maternal mortality increased 55% for white mothers, 23% for Hispanic mothers and 22% for Black mothers.
  • Food insecurity increased by 39% between 2003–2007 and 2015–2019 for American Indian and Alaska Native populations.
  • A strong link between educational attainment and health, with those without a high school education facing the greatest social, economic and health challenges, and the largest health disparities.
