Louisiana's First Lady teams up with United Health Foundation to award grants to local schools

Louisiana’s First Lady Donna Edwards recently visited the Grow Dat Youth Farm to announce $40,000 in grant awards from United Health Foundation and Whole Kids Foundation to 16 area schools to build or expand their vegetable gardens, salad bars or beehives. The grants also provide educational resources about agriculture, caring for the environment and maintaining healthy lifestyles.
Studies show that school gardening, combined with a healthy lunch program or nutrition education, encourages healthier food choices, and that children are more likely to eat fruits and vegetables they have grown themselves. More than a third of Louisiana children ages 10-17 are overweight or obese, according to America’s Health Rankings.
On April 17, Grow Dat Youth Farm, a grant recipient, launched the initiative with UnitedHealthcare employee volunteers helping around the farm.
