UnitedHealthcare recently announced it will acquire Peoples Health, a physicians-owned Medicare Advantage organization based in Metairie, La., with about 63,000 policyholders across the state.
Once the merger is finalized, Louisiana senior citizens will have access to expanded and cost-effective plan options. UnitedHealthcare and Peoples Health plan to finalize the deal as soon as possible pending regulatory approval.
The acquisition of Peoples Health continues UnitedHealthcare’s expansion and strengthens its position in the growing Medicare Advantage market. UnitedHealthcare’s enrollment in these plans increased 10.6 percent in the first quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago, as reported in April.
Peoples Health and UnitedHealthcare have not released financial terms of the agreement. Both organizations are committed to maintaining business as usual for Louisiana consumers and employees, and Peoples Health's leadership will remain in place. The acquisition will not affect Peoples Health’s 2018 Medicare Advantage plans, and members will continue to access care from providers in their network.
