Welcome. We’re glad you chose UnitedHealthcare. When you know how, managing your benefits and getting the care you need can be as easy as a walk in the park.

We’ll learn about two things that can help you avoid cost surprises: understanding how to use your UnitedHealthcare network; and when you need referrals.

Your network is a system of doctors, clinics, hospitals, labs and specialty treatment centers in your UnitedHealthcare plan that have agreed to charge lower prices.

But it’s not just about cost. We use evidence-based medicine and industry guidelines to evaluate the quality of our network doctors.  

So with thousands of doctors and thousands of hospitals and clinics you can get the care you need from network providers.

And that’s important, because when you go outside the network, you’ll likely end up paying more – sometimes lots more – for the same services.

For example, an MRI in the network could cost a few hundred bucks...or well over $1,000 dollars outside the network.

Tubes in your daughter's ears could be a couple thousand dollars...or twice that.

And if you need to have a knee replaced, you might pay $1,000...or five times as much!

And that brings us to the other thing that may help you avoid financial surprises: referrals. If your ID card has these words on it [“Referrals Required”], you'll need a referral to see a specialist.

There's a good reason referrals are required. Your Primary Care Provider (also known as your PCP) keeps track of your health care, can help prevent small things from becoming bigger, and really knows when your condition calls for a specialist. That's why you need a referral from your PCP to see a specialist. 

Seeing a specialist without a referral can be as expensive as going outside the network.
