Moving takes a lot of heavy lifting – and not just when it comes to boxes and furniture. It takes a lot of organizing, planning and patience.
Between all of the prep, remember to add “health plan changes” to your to-do list. Depending on the details of your move, you might need to – or want to – find a new plan. The special open enrollment period is available to you if:
- You’re moving to an area where you current coverage isn’t available.
- You’re moving to an area where your current coverage is still available - but there are new plans that you can get because of the move.
Your current coverage must have minimum essential health benefits (EHB) in order for your move to count as a qualifying event.
Timing is everything
Remember that your window of time for making changes to your health insurance is only open for 60 days after you move. Get started with making any changes right away to get the health plan you want and need. If you’ve had a qualifying life event, please call the phone number on the back of your member ID card.
No individual applying for health coverage through the individual Marketplace will be discouraged from applying for benefits, turned down for coverage or charged more premium because of health status, medical condition, mental illness claims experience, medical history, genetic information or health disability. In addition, no individual will be denied coverage based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, personal appearance, political affiliation or source of income.
Short Term Medical plans are medically underwritten and do not provide coverage for preexisting conditions or meet the mandated coverage necessary to avoid tax penalty under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Expiration or termination of a Short Term Medical℠ plan does not trigger an ACA Special Enrollment opportunity.
