Care and support for Bobby during a health emergency
For more than two decades, Bobby believed he was on the right track to a healthy lifestyle — dedicated to his workouts and living in the gym. He started having persistent heartburn feelings and brushed it off at first until a close friend encouraged him to take the symptoms seriously and see a cardiologist. That advice changed everything.
“I went to the cardiologist for some tests and expected a quick answer,” Bobby said. “Instead, things got very serious, very fast.”
He remembers waking up to two clinicians standing over him. His doctor gently explained the situation — a 95% blockage on the right side of his heart. Emergency surgery was scheduled for the next morning.
His spouse, Lucretia, recalls how overwhelming those first days felt. But within 48 hours of the surgery, she received a call from Rusty, their UnitedHealthcare advocate.
“He said, ‘I’m from UnitedHealthcare, I’m your health care advocate. What does Mr. Brown need? What do you need?’” Lucretia shared. “That call made all the difference.”
Rusty helped coordinate next steps, connected them with available benefits and made sure Bobby’s recovery plan aligned with their health plan. Bobby said, “Our care coordinator made us feel like we were valued and that we were a person because the way he interacted with us was not about a case or a claim.” For Bobby, that level of support meant he could focus on healing without navigating details on his own.
“It was an unbelievable experience,” Bobby said. “My spouse didn’t need to worry. I didn’t need to worry. All I had to do was recover.”
Today, Bobby and Lucretia approach life with intention. He keeps up with regular checkups, follows his care provider’s guidance and stays on top of the medications that help support his heart health.
“So many of us don’t recognize that heart conditions are a leading cause of health issues,” Bobby said. “Paying attention to those early signs really matters.”
And Bobby hasn’t forgotten the role his UnitedHealthcare advocate played. “We’re so grateful,” he said. “I told Rusty, if I ever had the chance to say thank you, I would. You’re saving lives.”
