How coordinated care helped Cheryl get back to living
Cheryl grew up around health care and learned early what compassionate, thoughtful care should look like. Her father was a pulmonologist and as a teenager, she helped file charts in his clinic. Later, Cheryl built a 35-year career as a medical operations manager. That experience gave her insight on how to navigate the health care system, both professionally and personally.
Throughout her career, Cheryl had many conversations with health insurance companies. “I always appreciated UnitedHealthcare because it seemed easier—it seemed more logical. We could reach people who listened to us.”
About two years ago, Cheryl retired and began looking ahead to a joyful new chapter. Both of her sons were planning weddings, and she was focused on staying healthy. But persistent sciatic pain wouldn’t go away. An MRI revealed devastating news: a large tumor pressing against her spine.
“I didn’t really anticipate having a medical crisis and that’s when I was really glad that I had UnitedHealthcare,” explained Cheryl. “The medical team and UnitedHealthcare worked behind the scenes so I could focus on my health.”
Everything moved quickly. Within days, Cheryl had scans, consultations and an eight‑hour surgery to successfully remove a football‑sized cancerous tumor.
“My experience with UnitedHealthcare has been phenomenal,” she says. “It was seamless for me. It was easy for me. I didn’t have to worry about something being covered.”
Cheryl recovered just in time to attend her two sons’ weddings—joy-filled moments she once feared she might miss. Today, she’s getting back to the life she loves: walking longer distances, scrapbooking family memories and traveling with her husband and family.
