Crystal’s personal experiences shape her purpose at UnitedHealthcare
For Crystal, preventive care is a mission. “Never discount the value of outreach,” she says. Crystal assists health care providers on ways to encourage their patients with UnitedHealthcare benefits to get preventive care services. These are routine health screenings that help people stay on top of their health — and catch anything before it becomes serious.
Her favorite screenings to recommend are those that support women’s health — especially mammograms. “No one likes a mammogram, but it’s important to know where to go and not be afraid,” Crystal says.
Last year, Crystal connected with UnitedHealthcare members to fill appointments for 28 health screening events. One partnership that she’s especially proud of is with Virtua Health and their mobile health screening unit van. By bringing screenings closer to where people live and work, the mobile van makes it convenient for women to get checked, which can lead to earlier detection. Seeing women step onto the truck reminded her why preventive care matters so much.
“I think about the women who might not otherwise prioritize themselves,” Crystal shares. “If I can help make it easier for them to get screened, then I know I’m doing something that matters.”
That perspective comes from experience. Crystal lost both of her grandmothers to late-stage breast cancer. Neither had mammograms, due to fear and access to care.
“That’s why preventive health care and screenings are important to me, because it could have been different for them.”
What might feel routine to some — scheduling a screening, sending a reminder, coordinating logistics — carries deeper meaning for her. Crystal knows that early detection may improve health outcomes and how access, awareness and encouragement all play a role in whether someone gets preventive care.
