With personalized care, Pablo can live fully with hemophilia
Most days begin early in Pablo’s house. Between work, his wife and one-year-old daughter, an energetic puppy and the everyday responsibilities of family life, Pablo has plenty to keep him moving. Like many busy parents, he often puts everyone else's needs first. And while he's always making time for the people who matter most, finding time to focus on his own health sometimes comes second.
However, he’s realized, "If I'm not at 100%, then I'm not going to be at 100% for my family."
Born with severe hemophilia A, Pablo has spent his entire life managing a bleeding disorder that requires ongoing treatment and preventive care. Today, his UnitedHealthcare benefits connect him with Optum Infusion Pharmacy and personalized support that help him stay proactive about his health, giving him the confidence and peace of mind he needs in order to focus on the people who matter most.
Pablo's story began in Mexico. At just three months old, his mother noticed unexplained bruising and became alarmed when a small nick while trimming his fingernails caused uncontrolled bleeding. After weeks of waiting for test results, Pablo's parents learned he had severe hemophilia A.
The diagnosis came with heartbreaking news. Doctors told his parents that in Mexico, children with severe hemophilia often lived only into their early teens, and warned them that Pablo's life would be filled with constant protective measures and restrictions.
Determined to find another path, Pablo's family searched for answers. An unexpected, life-altering opportunity arose when his grandfather in Mexico shared Pablo's story with a pastor in Arizona. The family was invited to come to the United States, where they found something they never imagined: adults with hemophilia living full, active lives.
"While the initial diagnosis was devastating, my parents soon realized that what the doctors in Mexico had told them didn't have to be my reality," Pablo says.
Today, Pablo describes hemophilia not as something that defines him, but as "a small obstacle.” As he grew older, he learned to advocate for himself, educating friends and teachers about his condition and discovering a community of others living with hemophilia through summer camp. Those experiences helped replace fear with optimism, completely changing his perspective.
Pablo says what he once viewed as a curse, he now sees as a blessing in disguise. "If I hadn't been born with hemophilia," he says, "we probably never would have come to the United States."
As time went on and life became busier—with marriage, fatherhood and growing responsibilities—Pablo began to forget about taking care of his own needs. Fortunately, that changed when he became a UnitedHealthcare member, and his benefits connected him with Optum Infusion Pharmacy. “UnitedHealthcare did a very good job of making that process easy for me. They know I’m a hemophiliac and they know the type of needs that I have,” Pablo explains.
While his medication arrives at his home each month, Pablo says the personalized support has made the biggest difference. One of the people he relies on is Rosalie, a patient liaison included as part of his UnitedHealthcare benefits. Having known Rosalie and her family through the hemophilia community for years, she understands his life in a way that goes beyond schedules and paperwork.
"She makes sure everything’s taken care of," Pablo says. "She checks in on me, reminds me about appointments, helps me with insurance questions, and helps me stay on top of everything so I can spend less time worrying about logistics and more time with my family.”
That same sense of personal connection extends throughout his care team. Pablo says the proactive support he’s received in every aspect of his care has made managing hemophilia feel much less overwhelming.
“UnitedHealthcare helps me feel relaxed because I know that everything is being taken care of,” Pablo says. He’s able to live in the moment, while looking forward to building a good life with his family and embracing everything the future has to offer. And because Pablo understands the importance of caring for himself, he’s ready for whatever’s next.
"The best is yet to come," he says.
