How Spencer is redefining support for families with special needs
Nearly 1 out of every 5 children in the United States has a special health care need.1 And families raising children with special needs often spend countless hours coordinating care across a complex health care system.
About a decade ago, UnitedHealthcare created the Special Needs Initiative program to help support families with children who have complex health care needs and help ease their stress. Today, Spencer leads the Special Needs Initiative, which connects eligible members with a dedicated family advisor, who provides information and support to help them make more informed health decisions.
He brings a unique perspective to his work leading strategy to improve the member experience. A husband and dad to four daughters, his 7-year-old Adelyn has special needs. Spencer understands the challenges of families with special needs — from finding the right care to coordinating services and advocating for consistent support.
“When I joined the Special Needs Initiative, it was a time of change for me personally,” he shares. “What we experienced as a family made me want to help improve the health system for other families like mine.”
Spencer describes the UnitedHealthcare Special Needs Initiative family advisor role as both practical and personal. Advisors help connect families to health care, anticipate needs, coordinate with providers and schools, and ensure important details are communicated.
“The relationship that gets built between a family advisor and a family is tremendous,” he says. “They really become part of the family.”
The Special Needs Initiative has grown immensely from one family advisor connecting with 10 families in 2017 to more than 400 family advisors today that support more than 30,000 new families each year. Spencer added, “My message to other families like mine, who have an amazing child with special needs, is to continue to advocate and engage.”
Today, Spencer and his team are exploring ways to bring personalized, relationship-based support to more families, including those transitioning into adulthood or living with complex conditions later in life. At the center of it all is a simple, yet transformative idea: health care works best when families are not navigating it alone. The Special Needs Initiative is making that idea a reality—one relationship at a time.
If you are a UnitedHealthcare member who is the parent of a child with special needs, call the number on your health plan ID card and ask about the Special Needs Initiative to get more information.
