How Level2 can help support a type 2 diabetes journey with GLP-1s

The impact of Level2 on GLP-1s

Transcript will be available on 11/26/2024.

Today, 1 in 10 people1 in the U.S. live with diabetes — with more than 1.2 million people2 diagnosed every year.

This, combined with the fact that adults in the U.S. consume more than two to three times the recommended daily allowance of sugar a day,3 means it’s critical for us all to be more aware of how we process what we put into our bodies.

For those with diabetes, programming, tools and resources can help ease the journey and provide support. This includes new medications, like GLP-1s.

Level2® is a value-based care solution that combines wearable technology with customized clinical support, with the goal of improving the average blood glucose and health of people living with type 2 diabetes. In combination with the use of GLP-1s, Level2 can help provide the support and continued lifestyle changes needed for long-term success.

Eligible participants are equipped with:

  • Glucose insights: Members start with a no-cost continuous glucose monitor (CGM). This wearable device helps them better see and understand their glucose and can begin to work with their Level2 team to make health improvements.
  • Level2 care team: Members get access to a virtual care team of type 2 diabetes experts. The team of doctors, nurses, coaches and registered dietitians helps members understand their glucose, build new habits and work toward feeling better.
  • Level2 method: Members work through a defined process to understand and improve glucose control with phase-by-phase lessons and activities to help them reach their next target.

For example, let’s walk through how Level2 can help a member like Joe.*

Joe thought he was eating a healthy Mediterranean diet but what he learned was foods like pasta, bread and bagels shot his glucose up dramatically – much more than he thought it should.

Because Joe had the support of Level2 to guide him, he was able to connect with a Level2 coach who guided him to cut out some carbohydrates from his diet and take frequent walks after meals to help regulate his levels.

Within three months, Joe lost weight, achieved his target glucose readings and did not need to increase his medication. These adjustments and lifestyle changes, as guided by Level2 experts, can help lead to lasting changes that improve their overall health.

For those taking GLP-1s to help manage their diabetes or as a weight loss solution, many say they don’t want to take those medications long-term — or for the rest of their lives.

The Level2 glucose monitoring approach allows a care team to optimize the use of these weight loss medications as a short-term intervention so patients taking them can have improved outcomes.

This means supporting those lifestyle changes that can promote long-term results. Through the CGM, the care team can see what’s happening when a patient takes these medications, how it affects their readings and how their dietary changes or daily exercise play a role.

The clinical team can also make adjustments, as needed, to these medications and help them maintain that weight loss when they come off GLP-1s.

“What we know is this drug class will be with us for a while and we know that many people will be taking these medications,” said Dr. Dave Moen, executive director of clinical affairs for Level2. “What we want to do is continue to offer the best access to the best support and the best knowledge available to optimize the use of these medications.”
