Showering pregnant women with baby necessities in Nevada

Pregnancy is an exciting time for moms-to-be, but preparing for a new baby can also be overwhelming.

In Nevada, more than 1 in 4 women do not begin prenatal care during their first trimester, a critical time for a healthy pregnancy.1 The earlier this care begins, the better, as it can help reduce the risk of complications, including low birth weight or essential vitamin deficiencies.

To help connect expectant families to care and resources, Health Plan of Nevada, the Southern Nevada Health District, Las Vegas City Councilwoman Olivia Díaz, and other community organizations collaborated to host a free community baby shower.

More than 250 women and families attended the event, which highlighted practical, preventive steps for a healthy pregnancy — starting with scheduling an appointment with a provider.

“Our goal is to bring support, resources and education directly to the community under one roof, making it easy for new and expecting parents to access what they need for a healthy start,” said Terrie Flaherty, MSN, RN, CCM, Clinical Manager for the Joyful Journeys OB Team, Health Plan of Nevada.

Attendees at the baby shower received:

  • Safe sleep guidance for infants
  • Car seat safety education
  • Information on prenatal and postpartum care
  • Parenting, community and family planning resources

Other organizations that participated in the baby shower included the Nevada Maternal and Child Health Coalition, University Medical Center Healthy Living Institute, Roseman University Empowered Program, Baby’s Bounty, Las Vegas Urban League WIC2, Children’s Cabinet, and Discovery for Kids.

“Supporting mothers and babies starts with access to information, services and community-based care,” said Las Vegas City Councilwoman Olivia Díaz. “This Community Baby Shower reflects our shared commitment to investing in families, strengthening neighborhoods and ensuring every child has a healthy start.”
