Distributing diapers and resources to children in Virginia

Of the many essential items a baby needs, diapers are one of the most important.

Unfortunately, 1 in 2 U.S. families are unable to afford the many diapers needed to keep babies clean and healthy. This can put babies at risk of illness, as well as often cause stress for mothers, who may then be at a higher risk for maternal depression.1

To help address this need, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Virginia and TenderHeart Health Outcomes provided more than 6,000 diapers and resources for children in the Alexandria, Virginia area. The Fund for Alexandria’s Child, an organization dedicated to enhancing the well‑being of at‑risk children, coordinated the distribution of these supplies.

This initiative builds on an ongoing collaboration between TenderHeart and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Virginia to help improve child and family health through increased access to diapers and other critical resources. In October 2025, the organizations launched a program that provides diapers to mothers who attend prenatal and postnatal appointments, supporting healthier outcomes for both newborns and their parents.

The Fund for Alexandria’s Child supports children in foster care and children at risk of abuse and neglect. Their mission is to ensure that every child has their basic needs met and an opportunity to participate in childhood activities, including team sports, dance, summer camp and more.

“We’re proud to work with TenderHeart and the Fund for Alexandria’s Child to make diapers more accessible,” said Jumelie Miller, CEO of UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Virginia. “A steady supply of diapers is critical for healthy babies and to alleviate the anxiety parents and caregivers can experience when they aren’t available. It’s a privilege to support our community members with the resources they need to live healthier lives.”
