Providing health and wellness essentials to Louisiana students

“What makes you feel confident?”

That’s a question that was posed to students gathered in the Broadmoor Senior High School library to talk about how they can be their best selves in the classroom — and in life.

The students were there to hear from some special guests who know a thing or two about confidence — Louisiana State University football players Chris Hilton, Jr. and Jardin Gilbert. Their big takeaway? Confidence can come from putting in the hard work, giving your best effort and staying dedicated.

As does having access to the essentials everyone needs for optimal health and well-being — starting with hygiene necessities. In Louisiana — where Broadmoor is located — economic hardship is high, which can make it challenging for families to afford even the basics.1 And for children, this economic instability can lead to potential negative academic, health and social outcomes.2

To help, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Louisiana donated $12,000 to stock a new hygiene pantry located at Broadmoor Senior High School.

The hygiene pantry is filled with items including:

  • Soap
  • Deodorant
  • Toothbrushes
  • Toothpaste
  • Dental floss
  • Mouthwash
  • Lotion
  • Laundry detergent

These essentials are all free and available — easily and discreetly — to any student who needs them. The pantry will be restocked regularly by UnitedHealthcare, as well as through donations from the local Baton Rouge community.

“This isn’t just about supplies — it is about providing access to the basic necessities students need to be their best in school and in life,” said Tiereny Mitchell, community specialist from UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Louisiana. “At UnitedHealthcare, we believe in service and are grateful for the opportunity to support the students, faculty and staff of Broadmoor High School.”
