Growing the health care workforce in New Mexico
Like so many other students at this time of year, Davina Jaramillo is back in the classroom. But she may not look like your typical student.
“At 52 years old, I am determined to achieve my dream of earning a college degree,” Davina said. “After raising six children, I have decided that now is the perfect time to pursue my dream.”
Davina attends Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) and is working toward an associate’s degree to support her goal of becoming a nurse. Having experience as a mother and hoping to make a difference in the lives of others, Davina ultimately wants to work in the labor and delivery ward.
“I know that CNM will provide me with the necessary skills to be the best nurse that I can be,” Davina said.
To help with the expenses associated with school, Davina applied for and received a $3,500 scholarship made possible through a collaboration among CNM’s Department of Workforce and Community Success, the CNM Foundation and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of New Mexico.
UnitedHealthcare’s $35,000 funding for the 2024-25 school year provided 10 $3,500 scholarships to students. For the 2025-26 school year, UnitedHealthcare will fund an additional $35,000 to provide scholarships again. These are available to students studying at CNM who are planning to pursue a future career in health care.
“Building the health care workforce is essential,” said Nancy Parson, Vice President of Clinical Operations for UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of New Mexico. “By working with schools in New Mexico and offering these scholarships, we’re able to support a pipeline of health care careers to help ensure our communities are cared for.”
New Mexico is experiencing a shortage of professionals in the health care field, particularly nurses.1 Initiatives like the scholarship program help lift some of the financial burden associated with college classes, as well as encourage students to pursue careers in health care.
“I am deeply honored and appreciative of this special opportunity you have provided. This award comes as a blessing,” Davina said.
