What is digital literacy and why is it important?

Have you heard of the term digital literacy? It sounds advanced, but it has nothing to do with writing code or building a computer. In fact, it’s pretty simple. Digital literacy is just a way to describe how well a person can use technology.

People who are online often can use digital platforms with ease. This includes downloading and using mobile apps. They can use technology to do a job or find information. They can also draw from past experiences to figure out how to do something new online.

Why is digital literacy important?

It may seem like almost everything happens online or has a digital aspect. Even simple tasks like shopping for food can be done using an app. You can even use digital coupons.

In the world of health care, digital literacy has become important. You can talk with doctors, make appointments and fill prescriptions all online.

Many tasks happen online now, including:

  • Talking with loved ones

  • Making purchases

  • Banking

  • Using maps and navigation

How to become more digitally literate

Technology makes some tasks easier. If it leaves you feeling overwhelmed, though, you’re not alone. You can take steps to add to your digital literacy.

The best way to do this is to explore the digital technologies around you. Some practical ways to increase your digital literacy are:

  • Learn how new devices work and what they’re meant to do

  • Read the directions provided

  • Look for online courses or webinars that can provide more information

  • Check your library or local senior center for in-person classes

  • Play around with the tech until you feel comfortable

If you’re learning how to use a specific website, portal or app, see if there are tutorials available. Or ask a friend or family member to help you the first time.

Most importantly, be patient with yourself. Know that you may have to try new things before you get used to it.

The most important tip? Stick with it. Digital platforms are made to be easy to use and learn. Keep trying and you'll be a pro in no time.
