The benefits of taking a driving test

Do you remember when you first got your driver’s license? With your new set of keys came a list of responsibilities, like know the rules, share the road, and stay alert. If you’ve been driving for a while, those rules might feel a bit like second nature. However, rules and cars can change and it’s important to remain up to date on best practices for driving.

There are a variety of reasons a driver might need to retake a driving test. Cars, traffic rules and driving conditions can change. Perhaps you’ve had to retake a driver’s test after moving to a new state. No matter what your driving experience is, a safety course refresher could be a good idea. Some states require licensed drivers above a certain age to renew their license in person—some even take a mandatory retest every few years.

Luckily, there are plenty of ways you can prepare yourself for the road and for any upcoming tests:

  • Exercise regularly to increase your strength and flexibility to help maintain control when driving
  • Ask your doctor to review your medicines to reduce side effects or interactions
  • Have your eyes checked annually
  • Plan your route ahead of time
  • Always maintain a safe distance behind the car in front of you
  • Avoid distractions, like phones, radio dials or eating while driving

Staying on top of safe driving techniques by taking a course and retaking a test can help you be better equipped for all kinds of driving hazards. You may even be able to use your test results to lower your insurance rates.
