Improving the member experience with compassion

Chanel's story

For Chanel Sutton, listening is an essential piece of leading with compassion for those she serves.

As an associate business process analyst on the UnitedHealthcare Call Insights team, she spends most days listening to member and advocate calls, identifying how to improve customer service. For those on the Call Insights team, reviewing these member calls helps surface patterns that can inform training, resource clarity and tools to help advocates in real time.

Chanel describes her approach to leadership as rooted in empathy, built on trust and always focused on people‑first.

“I model compassion in my everyday life, with my family, my friends,” she said. “It’s very easy to model it with our members and with our advocates.”

It’s an approach she’s seen firsthand through her own mother’s dedication to service. As a longtime active duty Marine, Chanel’s mother, Virginia, always treated everyone with respect, regardless of role or rank.

“My mom showed me through those interactions that it doesn’t matter anyone’s status, people are people and you treat them as people,” Chanel said. “I learned not only how to be a woman but just a good, decent person from my mom.”

Those lessons show up in Chanel’s calm, measured presence and her focus on making things better in difficult moments.

“I’ve never worked for a company that I truly believe in and that I feel that we do something for people, until UnitedHealthcare,” Chanel said.
