Leading with gratitude to support mental health care access
Julie's story
When a hurricane swept through her Florida neighborhood, Julie Billing watched the road wash away and the water rise through her home despite hours spent trying to push it back.
“The road to get out was a river,” Julie said. “We went back and forth for hours, trying to keep the water out. And then it came up to here,” she said, gesturing to her waist. “This whole courtyard — gone. We lost everything.”
As Julie says, there’s no playbook for that kind of loss. For weeks, Julie focused on survival. But eventually, she shifted her mindset.
“When I was able to switch that thought to thriving, it was because I started being grateful,” she said.
Even as she rebuilt her life, Julie continued leading her UnitedHealthcare team with warmth and steadiness — the same way she approaches her work every day.
Strength through adversity
Julie leads a mental health parity team at UnitedHealthcare, ensuring behavioral health services are as accessible as medical care. The work is complex and highly technical, but the purpose is simple: Remove barriers so members can get help when they need it most.
Her colleague Megan recalls how Julie showed up for others even in the middle of her own crisis.
“She lost so much in the flood, and she still led our team with a smile,” Megan said. “I know it was tough, but she stayed positive for all of us.”
That resilience shapes how Julie guides her team — with clarity, encouragement and a shared sense of purpose.
“When members come to us, it’s often during their most trying times,” she said. “They deserve the services they need to show up as their best selves.”
Empathy at the center
Julie believes everyone is carrying something — stress, responsibilities or challenges that aren’t always visible. That understanding guides her leadership. She creates space for flexibility, encourages balance between work and life, and checks in with genuine care.
“She’s always there for us,” Megan said. “Always.”
Through her work, Julie turns personal experience into hope for others — proving that when everything is rooted in compassion, it can help change lives.
