Why I volunteer with Special Olympics: My best friend Patrick

Cheering each other on: Jess & Patrick

The slap of sticks on the hardwood echoes through the gym as athletes rush toward the puck. For Patrick, playing with his Special Olympics floor hockey team is where he feels at home. At the edge of the court, his best friend Jess cheers him on, just as she has for the last five years.

They first met through a one‑to‑one friendship program which pairs people with and without intellectual or developmental disabilities. Movies, sporting events and Lego building quickly became their routine. Over time, their bond strengthened into something more meaningful. They even work together in the same building at UnitedHealthcare.

“Our friendship has developed just like a normal everyday friendship, but it’s grown so much deeper,” Jess said. “He feels like family now instead of just this person I get to see once a month.”

Jess has seen firsthand the impact Special Olympics has on Patrick, which is one of the reasons why she jumped at the chance to volunteer for the upcoming Special Olympics USA Games in June. As a co-presenting sponsor of the June games, UnitedHealthcare will bring a multitude of volunteers to help support the Special Olympics’ mission of inclusion.

“I’m so proud to work for UnitedHealthcare, somewhere that sponsors the Special Olympics Summer Games,” Jess said. “I think it’s so important to support people who might not always get that seat at the table, who might not always get the spotlight put on them.”

For Patrick, the chance to compete means a chance to be seen.

“Special Olympics is the best,” Patrick said. “Everyone there is just giving it their all. I feel, finally, that I’m being acknowledged for my skills and what I am able to do.”

Back at practice, Patrick lines up for another drill. Jess claps from the sideline. Their friendship reflects exactly what community can be when everyone has a place.

“Inclusion and having people feel like they belong is my North Star in life,” Jess said. “He belongs. And people with disabilities belong in these scenarios — in our places of work, in our communities, in our schools.”

UnitedHealthcare is co-presenting sponsor of the Special Olympics USA Games, which runs from June 21–26 in Minnesota.
