So, you enrolled with UnitedHealthcare through your employer. Now you’re on the way to using your new plan. We’re happy to join you on the journey. And in case you have some questions…we’ve got answers.

The day your coverage starts depends on your employer. While most plans start on  the first of the month,  that’s not always the case. So check with your employer or locate your start date in the materials you received when you enrolled.

Next, you’ll want to choose a doctor.


With some plans, you need to choose a primary care provider, or PCP. Your PCP is a doctor who serves as your personal health guide, keeping track of your health and connecting you with other doctors or specialists that are in the health plan’s network. These connections are called “referrals.”

Other plans allow you to see any doctor that’s in your health plan’s network — without a referral.

And some plans may save you money when you choose preferred providers from the network.

But no matter what plan you have, you should always select network doctors. If you see a doctor outside the network, you may pay more or your care may not be covered at all. If you already have a doctor you like, you’ll want to make sure that he or she is in the network, since using doctors that are in your network can save you a LOT of money.

When you visit the doctor or pharmacy, you should bring your ID card. Your card will arrive in the mail about a week to 10 days before your plan start date.
