Important Information About Our Relationship with Community Health Systems (CHS) Tennova

Five CHS Tennova hospitals now out of network for employer-sponsored, individual and Medicare Advantage plans

CHS Tennova has decided not to renew its participation in UnitedHealthcare’s network for employer-sponsored, individual and Medicare Advantage plans. This means the following hospitals are now considered out of network for these plans as of March 1, 2019:

  • LaFollette Medical Center
  • Newport Medical Center
  • Jefferson Memorial Hospital
  • North Knoxville Medical Center
  • Turkey Creek Medical Center

We recognize that these hospitals provide a variety of important health services and for that reason we are disappointed that CHS Tennova has chosen to interrupt the care for its patients and our members. As we continue our discussions with CHS Tennova in an effort to bring these hospitals back into our network, here are additional items you need to know:

CHS Tennova physicians remain in-network

As a reminder, this change does not impact CHS Tennova’s physicians, who continue to remain in network with UnitedHealthcare for employer-sponsored, individual and Medicare Advantage plans.

Continuity of Care may be available to you

Some UnitedHealthcare members may be able to continue receiving care at the affected CHS Tennova hospitals with in-network coverage for a period of time after the contract expires, such as members who are pregnant or undergoing active treatment for a serious medical condition, such as cancer. To determine eligibility, members can call the customer service number on their health plan ID card. For more information on Continuity of Care, please see our Continuity of Care fact sheet below.

Our Commitment to the Knoxville Community

We work hard each and every day on behalf of those we serve to ensure UnitedHealthcare members have access to a broad network of physicians, hospitals and other health care professionals that provide quality, affordable care.

The care CHS Tennova’s hospitals provide is not only important, but is personal and UnitedHealthcare remains focused on members’ continued access to care for those who are currently being treated at one of the CHS Tennova facilities affected by this situation. Members can call the number on their health insurance ID card to request a Continuity of Care benefit.
