Important Information About Our Relationship with the University of Alabama Birmingham Health System

For the last several months, we’ve been meeting regularly with the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) Health System to renew its hospital and physician contracts for our employer-sponsored, individual and Medicare Advantage health plans. If we are unable to reach an agreement, UAB’s physicians, as well as the following hospitals, would be out of network, effective July 31, 2019:

  • UAB Hospital*
  • Baptist Medical Center South
  • Baptist Medical Center East
  • Prattville Baptist Hospital
  • Medical West Hospital
  • Callahan Eye Hospital

Controlling Health Care Costs and Preserving Consumer Choice in Birmingham

*In-network for employer-sponsored and individual plans only

We appreciate that the role UAB plays in the community is not only important but also personal.

Our priority is to establish a long-term relationship with UAB that helps drive quality care, lower costs and an improved patient experience for the people we serve throughout Alabama.

UnitedHealthcare members with questions should call the number on their insurance ID card, but in the meantime, we will continue to update this website to ensure you have the information you need and are prepared in the event UAB chooses to not continue its participation in UnitedHealthcare’s network for employer-sponsored and Medicare Advantage benefit plans.

On behalf of our customers, members and our own employees who depend on UAB for health care, we remain committed to working with them to reach an agreement that provides access to affordable, quality care.

Continuity of Care and Our Commitment to You
