Our commitment to the North Carolinians and employers we serve

We understand how disruptive it can be for our members if their hospital no longer participates in our network. But we also know that rising health care costs are putting pressure on family budgets and making it harder for people to afford the care they need. Our members count on us to provide them with access to care that is not only high quality but also affordable. That is why we are working diligently to reach an agreement with WakeMed at a reasonable, affordable cost.

We remain committed to working with WakeMed and are hopeful we can reach a resolution that ensures uninterrupted access to the health system at an affordable cost. But we also want to reassure our members they will continue to have access to a robust network of care providers in the event WakeMed chooses to leave our network.

Offering a choice of some of the top hospitals in Raleigh and the surrounding area

We know that network changes can be difficult, but our members can rest assured that they will continue to have access to high-quality, affordable care close to where they live and work.

Some of the hospitals remaining in our network include the four top-ranked hospitals in the Raleigh-Durham area, according to U.S. News & World report’s rankings for best hospitals in the area. Some of the hospitals UnitedHealthcare members continue to have access to include, but are not limited to:

  • Duke Regional Hospital

  • Duke University Hospital

  • University of North Carolina Hospital

  • UNC Rex Hospital

  • UNC Johnston

We encourage our members to call the number on their health plan ID card if they need assistance finding alternative hospitals or physicians in their area. They can also use the provider directory on our member websites to search for alternative hospitals and doctors

Ensuring our members get the care they need

Continuity of Care

Our top priority is ensuring the people we serve have continued access to the care they need. That’s why we offer continuity of care, which allows UnitedHealthcare members in the middle of treatment for a serious condition to continue receiving covered services for a specified period of time after a provider leaves our network. Examples of patients who may qualify include but are not limited to:

  • Women who are pregnant and undergoing a course of treatment for the pregnancy from the provider or facility
  • Patients with newly diagnosed or relapsed cancer, or those currently in active cancer treatment

Some employer group plans offer unique, expanded continuity of care benefits. We encourage our members to call the number on the back of their health plan ID card if they have questions about their plan’s continuity of care benefits.

And please know that we will stay at the negotiating table as long as it takes to reach an agreement with WakeMed.
