Dr. Jen Gomez
Director of Human Resources
Sioux City Community Schools
Dr. Jen Gomez:
Our mission is believe, achieve, succeed. And of course, we're serving students, but I also think that holds true for our staff members.
Kim Smith:
So the best way to educate our students is to model that approach with health, and wellness, and behavioral health services. So we want our employees to be healthy and feel like they're coming to work happy, and that they're engaged. And they're supported.
Deion Clayborne:
My name's Deion Clayborne. I teach at Spalding Park Elementary School. I'm an ESL teacher, and I really enjoy working with kids.
Deion Clayborne:
We're going to talk about nouns. Can anybody tell me what a noun is?
Deion Clayborne:
It's important that you show up as your best self so you're able to provide the students with the support that they need to be successful in their classroom. If you're not physically and mentally well, it makes it difficult to be able to do that.
Kim Smith:
So everybody offers benefits for the most part. It's not about the baseline benefits anymore. It's about what can you offer that's unique and that can stand out to make your employment or your district better than the competition.
Dr. Jen Gomez:
With United Healthcare, we have the wellness component, so we're not just focused on the medical piece or the dental piece. It's about taking care of yourself before you have to use your health benefits in a sense.
Kim Smith:
United healthcare has been generous enough to give us a wellness budget. We have to orchestrate and plan for what events that we would like to do. We start biometric screenings in October. We've done mental health training and EAP services. We think our employee experience really needs to be about culture and wellness that's ingrained in a day in and day out basis. So we want to engage our employees by offering a lot of different activities that meet their needs. We get buy-in from our staff, our employees, and United Healthcare. The United Healthcare can really see that we are striving to make our employees stronger, happier, healthier, and that we're engaged as a company to make sure that wellness is number one.
Deion Clayborne:
We have a lot of different things that we're able to access to be able to help us live a better life and make healthier choices. I know that our district does these things to help show people that it is important. They do care about our health and wellness.
Kim Smith:
Employees at the end of the day, they're healthier, they're happier. But then, of course, on the flip side, from a business model, if you have healthier employees, your healthcare costs are going to be lower, which will then allow you to invest more back into your program to, again, keep that cycle going in the future, and to find new ways to continue to innovate your program to attract and retain the best employees that we can.
