Crystal provides compassionate care as a nurse advocate
As a registered nurse, Crystal is passionate about helping people and making sure their health care needs are thoroughly met.
When her own health journey made it challenging to be a nurse in the field, she found a role within UnitedHealthcare that still allowed her to offer compassionate care. Crystal was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that limited her movement.
“Lucky for me, UnitedHealthcare was there, and I could work and still take care of people virtually on my computer, on the phone,” she said.
Now, Crystal is a nurse advocate for UnitedHealthcare members with complex care and orthopedic issues.
“I love taking care of people,” she said. “I absolutely love it. That's where I get my energy is helping (others) to heal.”
Understanding health care isn’t always easy. Besides setting up appointments, going over lab work and helping members navigate their benefits, Crystal helps just by being an active listener. She can pick up on cues from the member, even by the tone of their voice and anticipate issues that might be stressors.
“I've had someone say, ‘Well, you know, the back of my legs are really hurting, but hey, I'm doing great,’” Crystal said, “and I thought, ‘Oh after a knee surgery, that's interesting because you very well could have a blood clot.’ And sure enough, he did.”
Those are the kinds of major interventions Crystal can help with — fulfilling her drive to help people live healthier lives.
“It made me feel really amazingly good that I can still help heal, I can still save lives,” she said. “It’s just in a different manner.”
