Bobby's journey: Personal support during a health emergency

After a cardiac emergency, a nurse case manager coordinated support so Bobby and his spouse could focus on recovery.

Serious health events can unfold quickly, leaving individuals and families navigating fear, uncertainty and a complex health system all at once. In moments like these, having the right support in place can make it easier for employees to focus on recovery instead of logistics. For employers, it’s a reminder that support beyond clinical care can play a critical role in the employee experience, health outcomes and even cost management. Bobby and his spouse experienced that support firsthand when a nurse case manager helped coordinate next steps after an unexpected cardiac emergency.

Care and support for Bobby during a health emergency

For more than 2 decades, Bobby believed he was doing everything right to stay healthy. He dedicated himself to fitness and maintaining an active lifestyle. That was until he began experiencing persistent heartburn that led him to schedule an appointment with a cardiologist. Shortly thereafter, he learned he had a 95% blockage on the right side of his heart that required emergency surgery the following morning.

His spouse, Lucretia, recalls how overwhelming those first days felt. But within 48 hours of the surgery, she received a call from Rusty, a UnitedHealthcare nurse case manager. “That call made all the difference,” Lucretia shared.

Rusty helped coordinate next steps, connected them with available benefits and made sure Bobby’s recovery plan aligned with their health plan coverage. “Our care coordinator made us feel like we were valued and that we were a person because the way he interacted with us was not about a case or a claim,” said Bobby. “My spouse didn’t need to worry. I didn’t need to worry. All I had to do was recover.”

Today, Bobby stays on top of his heart health and encourages others not to ignore warning signs. "So many of us don't recognize that heart conditions are a leading cause of health issues," he said. "Paying attention to those early signs really matters."

Bobby hasn't forgotten the impact of Rusty’s support: "We're so grateful. I told Rusty, if I ever had the chance to say thank you, I would. You're saving lives."

Bobby’s experience highlights how quickly complications can escalate during recovery. For employers, timely, personalized clinical support can help improve outcomes, reduce avoidable complications and prevent unexpected health care costs.

Care management and clinical programs, like Personal Health Support, are designed to provide support when it matters most. Personal Health Support uses a proprietary analytical model across 100+ conditions to identify members who may benefit from outreach and connect them with personalized support. This outbound engagement also complements support available through UnitedHealthcare WholePath Advocacy solutions, which bring together medical, specialty, pharmacy, behavioral health and clinical resources to help members navigate their benefits and care. Advocates can help answer coverage questions, resolve claims and billing issues and connect members with relevant programs.

Members can also start a conversation with Avery®, an AI virtual assistant available through the UnitedHealthcare® app or myuhc.com®. When additional support is needed, the conversation can be routed to an Advocate with relevant context, helping reduce the need for members to repeat their story. Advocates also have their own version of Avery to surface timely information during conversations, helping them focus on each member’s needs. Together, these resources help connect digital convenience with personal support in everyday moments and more complex situations.
