What’s the difference between Medicare and Group Medicare?
There are distinct differences in the level of coverage available from individual Medicare plans and group Medicare plans. Learn how a group Medicare plan can provide more comprehensive coverage for your employees.
Medicare, also known as Original Medicare or Medicare Parts A and B, is a federal government health insurance program available to people who are 65 or older. People under 65 may qualify if they have a disability or other special situation. Medicare helps millions of Americans cover some of their health care costs.
Group Medicare Advantage plans
Employers and plan sponsors can offer Group Medicare Advantage plans to employees when they retire.
Group Medicare Advantage plans typically reduce the gaps in coverage associated with Original Medicare. These plans help retirees retain the same or a similar level of coverage they enjoyed before retiring.

Effectively replaces employer plans that combine Original Medicare and a Medicare Supplement plan

Medicare Advantage National Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans from UnitedHealthcare are another cost-conscious way to offer health care coverage to your retirees.
HMO plans provide coverage for plan members through a network of locally contracted doctors and hospitals
While HMO plans do not provide out-of-network coverage (except in emergencies), they may be more affordable
Medicare Part D is the Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit. When paired with Original Medicare, it helps members cover the cost of prescription drugs they take at home.

AARP Medicare Supplement insurance plans are insured by UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company (UnitedHealthcare).¹ These plans cover expenses not covered by Original Medicare, such as copays and coinsurance costs. They are available to retirees age 65 and older who are enrolled in Original Medicare (Parts A and B).

Individual retiree plans
UnitedHealthcare can help transition retirees from group to individual Medicare plans through an exchange model. In an exchange, retirees can shop for individual coverage and choose the benefits and cost-savings they want. Their choices are dependent on their health care needs and their budget.
Pre-65 group health care coverage
We also offer traditional employer-sponsored group health care plans.
