Health care coverage for teachers, education employees and their families

UnitedHealthcare offers health care plans to K–12 teachers, employees, higher education faculty and staff, and their families. Rely on our years of experience working with K–12 and higher education administrators — along with our data and analytics — to help you make informed decisions about the type of quality health care your employees need.

Working with UnitedHealthcare may help you:

  • Lower health care costs
  • Safeguard public resources
  • Educate teachers and staff to make informed health care decisions and lead healthier lives

Who’s eligible for coverage?

K–12 employees

K–12 employees who work at least 30 hours per week, as well their spouses and children, can get health benefits. Part-time employees (working less than 30 hours per week) can get coverage, depending on guidelines set by their school district or union.

K–12 employees include:

  • Administrators
  • Bus drivers
  • Custodians
  • Food service employees
  • Paraprofessionals
  • Teachers

Higher education employees

Eligibility for staff, faculty and their dependents is based on their specific institution’s requirements. Coverage eligibility may also depend on job classification (for example, whether the employee is faculty or staff). Other requirements include the length of an employee’s appointment and the number of hours they are contracted to work.

Eligible dependents of higher education employees include:

  • Spouses
  • Partners
  • Children under the age of 26
  • Children with a developmental disability
